We Marina Pacifica – Lagoons

WE MARINA PACIFICA!

Marina Pacifica has so many great features and benefits for residents. The  landscaping, pools, and lagoons are beautiful! Behind the scenes, it takes a lot of  work to keep everything working properly and looking pristine. Fortunately, there is a  dedicated team working on this daily and there are a number of residents that also  help out to ensure everything continues to look fabulous for the community.

Living in the lagoons, along with the fish and other natural habitat, are crayfish. Crayfish are freshwater crustaceans belonging to the infraorder Astacidea, which also contains lobsters. The problem with crayfish is that they reproduce rapidly and can alter ecosystems by reducing the abundance of plant species   and by competing with other organisms for limited food and shelter. By preying on local species, invasive crayfish can remove important members of the food web and leave the water cloudy.

Cheryl Berlow and a friend had been actively working on this issue in the lagoon  between Keys 12 and 16. They used traps to catch   the crayfish and remove them from the lagoon.

Eradicating crayfish from each lagoon is a long process, according to Cheryl, as one crayfish can lay 287 eggs. The benefit of their work is that the lagoons look better and the fish and other natural habitat can thrive in their natural ecosystems.

If you, or someone you know, is working to make a difference in Marina Pacifica, please let me know and I will highlight that individual  in a future newsletter article.
